About the Westeinderplassen & nautical chart
Sailing school Aalsmeer is situated on the eastern shore of the “Westeinderplassen”. The Westeinderplassen is the largest lake area in the “Randstad”, the metropolitan area of the Netherlands. The lake area consists of one large pond and several smaller ones, interlaced with small islands, most of which are private property. All ponds are connected by narrow channels and waterways. The lakes originate from the extraction of peat, which was the main source of fuel in The Netherlands until it was replaced by coal in the 19th century.
The variety of the lake area allows for great sailing and other water sports in most weather conditions. The big pond can be a smooth mirror during light wind conditions, but strong winds from the west or southwest will generate big waves. At those times windsurfers and wing foilers will find excellent conditions in the surf bay on the eastern leeshore where a breakwater dam limits the wave action while the wind has free reign. Those preferring lighter conditions will find refuge from the wind and waves on the smaller ponds north of the island chain. The narrow waterways between the islands are a great maze to explore by canoe, SUP or motorboat.
Along the northern edge of the Westeinderplassen lies the “Haarlemmerringvaart”. About 12 kilometers along this man-made channel to the northeast lies lake “Nieuwe Meer” on the outskirts of Amsterdam. In the other direction the channel leads to two other lake areas: “Braassemmermeer” and “De Kaag”.
The Westeinderplassen are not only a water sports delight, it is also a wonderful natural habitat for many species such as the kingfisher, European eel, northern pike and the protected catfish. Enjoy this beautiful freshwater body and please be civil and help us preserve its quality and charm.
